Escritor de Texas muy diverso: Novelas, cuento corto, guiones, comics.
Desde la sátira en Bubba Ho-Tep hasta zombies sangrientos en On the Far Side of the Cadillac Desert With Dead Folks.
Su historia Incident On and Off a Mountain Road fue adaptada para el primer episodio de la serie “Masters of Horror”.
Nominado para 16 Bram Stoker Awards. Ganados 7. El más reciente en el 2006 por su antología Retro Pulp Tales.

Colaboración en dos libros con Stephen King (Talisman y Blackhouse)
Recomendación: Ghost Story (1979) Shadowland (1980).

Amigo de correspondencia de H.P. Lovecraft
En 1959 escribe la historia que será una influencia para miles de películas, Psycho!, en 1982 su secuela Psycho II y en 1990 completa la trilogía con Psycho House
Ganador de un Hugo por  The Hell-Bound Train.
Recomendación: The Early Fears, Una colección de 40 historias.

The Hellbound Heart  será la base para la serie de Hellraiser y Cabal, adaptada al cine en 1990 (Nightbreed)
